The Ayah's Home

At No.26 King Edwards Road, Hackney there is a building that was once a sanctuary for abandoned and destitute South and East Asian women who had been hired as Amahs and Ayahs to care for the children of the British Empire on their family’s long journeys ‘home’ to Britain and then left alone in London without pay by their employers. The home found them a return ticket with new families. India gained independence from Britain in 1947, and after that the Home faded into obscurity.
